He was named  Varadhar because he gave all the vara he wanted.

Varadharajaperumal appeared in the month of Chittirai on the star of Thiruvonam to all the gods in the kada of the conch chakra in the Punniyakodi vimana. So on the same day Brahmadevar worshiped Thiruvadi of Perumal and created Atti Varadhar with the fig tree who had given him a vision and this is how Atti Varadhar arose on earth.

Once Brahmadeva performed a yajna in front of the Atti Varadhar. The Atti Varadhar was torn apart due to the yajna. Brahmadeva was trapped. Brahma prayed to Thirumal in an environment where he could not create Perumala in any other form. At his suggestion, Attivaratharai was placed in a silver ark on a silver ark in another hall below the Niradi Mandapam on the south side of the two Thirukurals north of the Nurukkal Mandapam.

It was told to Lord Brahma that the whole of the  Kali Yuga would be in a cool state in this blissful Pushkarani Tirukulam called Amritsaras and thus this Tirukulam would never dry up. Deva Raja Perumal from the old town of Sivaram came to temple after  Atti Varadhar going near the Pond.
